Overview

Zinc finger protein 587B (ZNF587B) is a member of the C2H2-type and KRAB domain-containing zinc finger protein family, which constitutes one of the largest classes of human transcription factors. ZNF587B functions as a transcriptional repressor, likely regulating gene expression involved in cellular proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis, and chemoresistance. Recent studies in ovarian cancer and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma suggest that ZNF587B is a tumor suppressor whose expression is downregulated in malignant cells and whose overexpression can suppress proliferation, migration, invasion, and improve chemosensitivity. ZNF587B also plays a role in heterochromatin maintenance at transposable elements, implicating it in regulation of genome integrity, replication stress response, and potential immune evasion in cancer. Its utility as a biomarker for prognosis in ovarian cancer patients has been reported, but its biological mechanisms remain insufficiently characterized and detection tools are limited.

Mechanism of action

As a tumor suppressor: Overexpression of ZNF587B reduces cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and promotes apoptosis when exposed to cisplatin, potentially acting via transcriptional repression via its KRAB domain and DNA binding via C2H2 motifs. Downregulation leads to increased chemoresistance and tumor aggressiveness in ovarian cancer cells.
