Target intelligence / Profile preview

Zinc finger protein 589 (ZNF589)

Target
ZNF589
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, KRAB-zinc finger protein, DNA-binding protein, Krüppel-associated box domain zinc finger (KRAB-ZNF) protein, C2H2-type zinc finger protein
01

Overview

ZNF589 is a KRAB-zinc finger transcriptional repressor that plays critical roles in hematopoietic stem cell biology and cancer. It contains human-specific evolutionary changes and functions as a regulator of cell viability, apoptosis, and differentiation. The protein is downregulated in breast cancer through promoter hypermethylation and serves as a potential tumor suppressor and prognostic biomarker.

Mechanism of action

Transcriptional repression by binding DNA and operating through RNA polymerase II-specific mechanisms, mediated by its KRAB domain which interacts with TRIM28 and recruits histone deacetylase complexes, histone methylases, and heterochromatin proteins.
