Overview

Zinc finger protein 608 (ZNF608) is a member of the C2H2-type zinc finger protein family, functioning predominantly as a transcription factor involved in the negative regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II[1][3][4][6][7]. ZNF608 specifically represses the transcription of the gene ZNF609[3][4][7]. It is predicted to act in the nucleus and binds metal ions (notably zinc) as part of its structural motif[2][4]. Recent research implicates ZNF608 in cancer biology, where it is a direct regulatory target of miR-21-3p—a microRNA associated with promoting cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and chemoresistance in ovarian and prostate tumors[1]. The gene is also known by several aliases, including NY-REN-36 and is expressed as a protein-coding gene on human chromosome 5[3][4][6][7]. Although ZNF608 participates in functional gene regulation, there are currently no clinically approved drugs or direct therapeutic modalities reported to target this protein, nor is it classified as a clinically actionable therapeutic target at this time[1][3][4][7].
