Zinc finger protein 658 (ZNF658) is a zinc-responsive transcription factor that represses transcription of genes, including SLC30A5, SLC30A10, and CBWD1, by binding to the zinc transcriptional regulatory element (ZTRE) within their promoter regions. It regulates zinc homeostasis and plays a key role in coordinating ribosome biogenesis, which is a highly zinc-demanding cellular process, by controlling levels of ribosomal RNA and ribosomal proteins in accordance with cellular zinc availability. ZNF658 is predicted to localize to the nucleus and carries out its function by binding DNA and modulating gene expression, especially in response to zinc ion levels. Disease association has been reported with Hemoglobin H disease, but direct therapeutic targeting or drug interaction data is not currently available.
