Overview

Zinc finger protein 676 (ZNF676) is a hominoid-specific member of the KRAB zinc finger protein (KZFP) family functioning primarily as a DNA-binding transcription factor and transcriptional repressor[2][4][6]. It binds with sequence specificity, through its KRAB and C2H2-type zinc finger domains, to long terminal repeat (LTR) sequences of endogenous retroviruses (notably LTR12C) and represses their transcriptional activity, thereby regulating gene networks crucial in early embryonic development and gametogenesis[2]. ZNF676 is also implicated in the maintenance of epigenetic marks—its binding coincides with protection of certain genomic loci (e.g., LTR12 elements) from demethylation during germ cell development, with downstream effects on gene expression inheritance[2]. Genome-wide association studies have linked variants near ZNF676 to leukocyte telomere length, and emerging data highlight its relevance in telomere biology, age-related disease risk, and reproductive function[5]. There are no known approved drugs targeting ZNF676, nor are there established clinical safety concerns associated with targeting this gene.
