Zinc finger protein 704 (ZNF704)

Target
ZNF704
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Zinc finger protein
01

Overview

Zinc finger protein 704 (ZNF704) is a nuclear, sequence-specific DNA-binding protein that acts as a transcription factor, regulating gene expression via RNA polymerase II. ZNF704 physically interacts with the SIN3A corepressor complex (including SIN3A, SAP130, HDAC1, HDAC2, and RBBP4) and contributes to the transcriptional repression of target genes. It is variably expressed across tissues, mainly localizing to the nucleus. ZNF704 has been implicated in oncogenic processes, with overexpression associated with poor prognosis and increased cell proliferation in chondrosarcoma, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and uveal melanoma. Mechanistically, ZNF704 activates the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in some cancers. With its strong association with several tumor types and influence on cell growth and apoptosis, ZNF704 is an emerging biomarker and potential therapeutic target in oncology.

Mechanism of action

Not directly applicable since no specific drugs are known to target ZNF704; hypothetical mechanism would involve inhibition or modulation of transcriptional activity, potentially via disruption of its interaction with SIN3A or DNA binding

03

Biological functions

Regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase IISequence-specific double-stranded DNA bindingRegulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis
04

Disease associations

Cancer (e.g., breast cancer, prostate cancer, chondrosarcoma, uveal melanoma)
05

Safety considerations

No direct safety concerns reported for targeting ZNF704; general concerns would relate to non-specific effects on gene regulation and potential impact on normal cell transcriptional networks
06

Biomarkers

ZNF704 expression serves as a biomarker for prognosis in some cancers such as chondrosarcoma and uveal melanoma
