Overview

Zinc finger protein 711 (ZNF711) is a nuclear transcription factor that contains classical C2H2-type zinc finger domains, binds DNA in a sequence-specific manner, and is crucial for brain and neuron development. It is located on the X chromosome, and disruptions or mutations in ZNF711 are associated with intellectual developmental disorders, specifically forms of X-linked intellectual disability. ZNF711 regulates gene expression by acting at gene promoters and interacting with the histone demethylase PHF8, thus modulating neuronal gene transcription, such as activation of KDM5C. Recent structural studies confirm that even its “degenerate” seventh zinc finger domain forms a stable fold and may play a role in catalysis and DNA recognition. ZNF711 is not currently considered a direct therapeutic drug target, and there are no known small-molecule drugs that modulate this protein.
