Overview

Zinc finger protein 823 (ZNF823) is a protein-coding gene in humans that encodes a putative transcription factor. Members of the zinc finger protein family exert their primary biological roles by binding to DNA and regulating gene expression; most contain structural motifs such as C2H2 domains, which enable sequence-specific DNA binding. ZNF823 is predicted to be involved in the regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II and localizes to the nucleus. While members of the broader zinc finger protein family are implicated in various diseases, particularly cancer, there are no known disease associations, therapeutic targeting, or drug interactions reported specifically for ZNF823. ZNF823 is not identified as a canonical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and its functional and disease relevance remain largely uncharacterized in the literature. Notably, aliases such as "ZFP36" and "ZFP-36" are incorrectly associated with ZNF823; these names properly refer to the unrelated gene Tristetraprolin (ZFP36/Tristetraprolin, HGNC: 12852), which is involved in mRNA decay and immune regulation.
