Overview

Zinc finger protein 839 (ZNF839) is a human protein encoded by the ZNF839 gene located on chromosome 14q32.31[3]. It belongs to the C2H2-type zinc finger transcription factor family, the largest family of transcription factors in the human genome[1][3]. ZNF839 contains a zinc finger domain and potentially a domain of unknown function (DUF4764)[2][5]. Predominantly expressed in the testis and certain regions of the brain, its main molecular role is transcription regulation through sequence-specific DNA binding, modulating target gene expression[3][2]. There is interest in ZNF839 as it has been identified as a renal carcinoma antigen (NY-REN-50)—suggesting overexpression in certain cancers and a possible immune or diagnostic role in oncology, but there are no known therapeutics targeting it or approved biomarker uses[3]. ZNF839 has been shown to interact with proteins such as TP53 and 14-3-3 proteins, supporting possible regulatory roles in the cell cycle, apoptosis, or DNA damage response, but its direct disease mechanisms and druggability remain poorly characterized[3].
