Zinc finger protein 845 (ZNF845)

Target
ZNF845
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Zinc finger protein (C2H2-type)
01

Overview

Zinc finger protein 845 (ZNF845) is a novel transcription factor containing six tandem C2H2 zinc finger domains, first identified in cnidarians such as Hydra and Nematostella vectensis. It plays a crucial developmental role by promoting the differentiation of cnidocytes—the specialized stinging cells unique to cnidarians—while inhibiting the neural fate in embryonic development. ZNF845 functions as a key upstream regulator in the cnidocyte lineage, acting before expression of PaxA and other cnidocyte-specific transcription factors. It is one of several zinc finger proteins that arose in early animal evolution and does not have any direct orthologs or known regulatory functions in humans[1][2][3].

Mechanism of action

Biologically, ZNF845 acts upstream of PaxA and other markers in the cnidogenesis pathway, promotes cnidocyte (stinging cell) differentiation, and inhibits neural lineage, in part through regulation of nuclear receptor NR12
