Zinc finger protein 880 (ZNF880)

Target
ZNF880
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Zinc finger protein, KRAB domain-containing protein
01

Overview

Zinc finger protein 880 is a predicted DNA-binding transcription factor belonging to the KRAB-type zinc finger protein family, characterized by the presence of C2H2 zinc finger domains and a KRAB domain. It functions in the regulation of gene transcription by RNA polymerase II and is active in the nucleus. ZNF880 has strong tissue-specific expression and participates in complex regulatory networks, including being regulated by miRNAs and lncRNAs. Reduced expression of ZNF880, through promoter hypermethylation and sequence variants, is strongly linked to worse outcomes (shorter overall and disease-free survival) in colorectal carcinoma. It also serves as a biomarker for distinguishing normal and tumor tissues in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, with potential diagnostic utility supported by transcriptomic data. No drugs currently target ZNF880 directly, and therapeutic modulation of its expression (e.g., by targeting regulatory non-coding RNAs) remains experimental.
