Zinc finger protein interacting with K protein 1 (ZIK1) is a protein featuring nine C2H2-type zinc finger motifs in its C-terminus and a KRAB-A (Krüppel-associated box-A) domain. Its main biological function is to bind specific DNA elements in the nucleus and repress transcription via interactions with chromatin and other nuclear proteins, such as heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNP K). ZIK1 interacts directly with K protein and can modulate gene expression by serving as a docking partner or regulator in signal transduction and gene expression pathways. Although ZIK1 shares structural similarities with other zinc finger transcriptional repressors, it is not considered a classical therapeutic drug target and has not been implicated directly in disease mechanisms besides some association with Goldberg-Shprintzen syndrome. As a general member of the zinc finger protein family, it participates in a wide range of DNA and protein interactions, thus contributing to the regulation of transcription and cellular identity.
