Overview

Zinc finger ZZ-type and EF-hand domain-containing protein 1 (ZZEF1) is a multidomain protein characterized by the presence of ZZ-type zinc finger and EF-hand motifs. It functions primarily as a histone H3 reader, binding to the N-terminus of histone H3 and recognizing various epigenetic modifications on the H3 tail. ZZEF1 serves as a transcriptional coregulator, particularly by interacting with Krüppel-like factors KLF6 and KLF9 and modulating the expression of their target genes. The protein is implicated in chromatin organization, transcriptional regulation, and possibly neuronal and visual processes. Mutations in ZZEF1 have been associated in the literature with diseases such as diabetes and certain cancers, but it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter
