Zinc Ion (Zn²⁺)

Target
Zn²⁺
Molecular classification
Inorganic Ion, Cofactor
01

Overview

The zinc ion (Zn²⁺) is the divalent cation form of the element zinc. It is an essential micronutrient that plays vital roles in biological systems as a cofactor for numerous enzymes, a structural component of proteins (e.g., zinc fingers), and in cellular signaling. Zinc is redox-inert and primarily coordinates with oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms in proteins. It is used therapeutically to inhibit copper absorption in conditions like Wilson's disease. Zinc deficiency can lead to various health problems, including growth retardation and immune dysfunction.
