Target intelligence / Profile preview
Zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8), encoded by the SLC30A8 gene, is a member of the SLC30 family of zinc transporters. It functions as a proton-coupled zinc ion antiporter, mediating the entry of zinc into the lumen of pancreatic beta cell secretory granules. This process is essential for insulin storage, maturation, and secretion in pancreatic β-cells. Genetic variants in SLC30A8 are associated with increased or decreased risk of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, with loss-of-function mutations conferring protection against Type 2 Diabetes.
Modulation of zinc transport into pancreatic beta cell secretory granules.
