Overview

ZMIZ1 antisense RNA 1 (ZMIZ1-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the ZMIZ1 gene locus. As an antisense lncRNA, ZMIZ1-AS1 is believed to regulate the expression of its sense counterpart ZMIZ1 or other genes through mechanisms common to lncRNAs, such as RNA-RNA base pairing, chromatin modification, or acting as a molecular scaffold. Elevated or altered expression of ZMIZ1-AS1 has been implicated in several malignancies, where it may act to promote tumor cell proliferation, invasion, or metastasis via regulation of oncogenic targets. However, ZMIZ1-AS1 itself is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or classical therapeutic target; its relevance is primarily as a noncoding RNA regulator and potential biomarker in cancer and possibly other diseases. No FDA- or clinically-approved drugs are known to target ZMIZ1-AS1 directly.
