Overview

ZMYM4 antisense RNA 1 (ZMYM4-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand in the region of the ZMYM4 gene. Like other antisense RNAs, it is thought to function in regulating gene expression, potentially through cis- or trans-effects mediated by RNA-RNA interactions or through effects on chromatin structure[2]. There is evidence suggesting that related antisense lncRNAs may act as competing endogenous RNAs to modulate the levels of target mRNAs, but the precise biological role for ZMYM4-AS1 is incompletely characterized. One study notes that ZMYM4-AS1 can modulate gene expression in cranial development, possibly by acting as a regulatory RNA[3]. As of the current evidence, ZMYM4-AS1 is not a therapeutic target and has no known small molecule or biologic drugs directed against it. Its principal importance resides in gene regulatory mechanisms typical of antisense long non-coding RNAs.
