Overview

Zn regulated GTPase metalloprotein activator 1E (ZNG1E) is a zinc metallochaperone that belongs to the COG0523 GTPase protein family[2]. It enables GTPase activity and transfers zinc ions to specific metalloproteins, particularly activating methionine aminopeptidase METAP1 in a zinc- and GTP hydrolysis-dependent manner[2][1][5]. This function is especially important for cellular zinc homeostasis and protein maturation, notably under zinc-starved conditions[2]. ZNG1E is predicted to reside in the nucleus and cytoplasm. Loss of ZNG1E in animal models leads to impaired cell proliferation and mitochondrial dysfunction under conditions of zinc deficiency, demonstrating its role in organismal zinc homeostasis, but it is not currently recognized as a drug target or directly associated with major human diseases[2][1][3].
