Overview

ZNF295 antisense RNA 1 (ZNF295-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA gene located on chromosome 21q22.3. It functions primarily as an antisense RNA regulating gene expression, especially interacting with the ZNF295 gene. Recent literature highlights its role in regulating autophagy in endothelial cells, implicating it in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. It is associated through genetic studies with diseases including lung cancer susceptibility and autism spectrum disorder[1][3][9]. ZNF295-AS1 is not translated into protein and is classified as a non-protein coding RNA gene[2][4]. There are no drugs or therapeutic agents targeting ZNF295-AS1, and its use as a biomarker or therapeutic target remains investigational.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable for direct drug targeting. Mechanistically, ZNF295-AS1 has been described to inhibit autophagy via the ZNF295-AS1/miR-508-5p/ATG7 pathway in atherosclerosis models.
