Overview

ZNF793 antisense RNA 1 (ZNF793-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) classified as an antisense RNA because it is transcribed in the opposite orientation to the ZNF793 gene. It is located on the human chromosome 19q13.12 and does not encode a protein[2][1]. ZNF793-AS1 participates in regulation of gene expression, potentially acting via the recruitment of transcription factors, modulation of chromatin state, or affecting alternative splicing through interactions with splicing factors[2]. Like many lncRNAs, ZNF793-AS1 may function as an enhancer or as a scaffold for protein complexes involved in gene expression regulation. Available expression data show that ZNF793-AS1 can be upregulated in some cancers, such as lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), suggesting a possible role in oncogenic processes[2]. Functional interaction studies suggest associations with proteins involved in epigenetic regulation (e.g., SMARCE1, KMT2B) and transcriptional control (e.g., SAFB2, ZNF10, RBM6), though specific downstream gene targets and physiological consequences remain to be thoroughly characterized[2]. As with many lncRNAs, ZNF793-AS1 is not considered a canonical "therapeutic target" like a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, nor are there clinically validated drugs/biomarkers or established safety concerns directly linked to it[1][2]. Its principal scientific interest lies in its emerging regulatory roles in physiology and possible involvement in cancer biology.
