Overview

ZSCAN16 antisense RNA 1 (ZSCAN16-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located on human chromosome 6, transcribed antisense to the ZSCAN16 gene[2][5]. ZSCAN16-AS1 is predominantly cytoplasmic and promotes oncogenic properties in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by acting as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) that sequesters miR-451a, thereby increasing the expression of activating transcription factor 2 (ATF2)[1][5]. Elevated ZSCAN16-AS1 expression is associated with increased tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, as well as reduced apoptosis in HCC[1]. High levels of ZSCAN16-AS1 correlate with poor prognosis in HCC patients, suggesting its utility as a biomarker[1][5]. As a lncRNA, ZSCAN16-AS1 is not a receptor, enzyme, or canonical therapeutic target, but may represent a potential molecular target for RNA-based therapies in cancer[1][3][5].
