Combination therapy consisting of adalimumab (a TNF-alpha inhibitor) and azathioprine (an immunosuppressant). Adalimumab is a monoclonal antibody that works by binding to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), blocking its interaction with cell surface TNF receptors to inhibit inflammatory pathways. Azathioprine functions as a purine analog that inhibits purine synthesis, disrupting DNA and RNA production in rapidly proliferating immune cells, particularly T and B lymphocytes. This suppression reduces excessive inflammatory responses. This combination is primarily used in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly Crohn's disease.
