Overview
Ganfunèng is a Chinese brand of ademetionine 1,4-butanedisulfonate, a stable salt of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). SAMe is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that serves as a primary methyl donor in the body and is involved in the transsulfuration and polyamine synthesis pathways. Originally developed by Abbott Laboratories as Transmetil, it is approved for treating intrahepatic cholestasis in adults and during pregnancy. Beyond its hepatic indications, Ganfunèng is being investigated for its neuroprotective properties, specifically for the prevention of perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) in elderly patients. Its mechanism of action includes the inhibition of Phosphodiesterase 4B (PDE4B) and the modulation of methylation and antioxidant pathways. It is typically formulated as a freeze-dried powder for intravenous injection.
