Overview

Amphotericin + micafungin is a combination of two antifungal agents used primarily for the treatment of severe, invasive fungal infections. Amphotericin (usually as amphotericin B) is a polyene antifungal that binds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, creating pores and causing cell death. Micafungin is an echinocandin antifungal that inhibits the synthesis of 1,3-β-D-glucan, an essential component of the fungal cell wall. The combination leverages different mechanisms to enhance antifungal efficacy and potentially reduce resistance or toxicity associated with higher doses of either agent alone. This combination has been studied in vitro and in vivo for synergistic effects against various Candida species, Aspergillus species, and other difficult-to-treat fungi. It has also been used as salvage therapy or when monotherapy fails or is not tolerated[1][2][6].
