Anti-factor IX antibodies are a class of immunoglobulins that target and neutralize coagulation Factor IX (FIX), a critical serine protease in the intrinsic pathway of the blood coagulation cascade. While these antibodies typically arise as 'inhibitors' in patients with hemophilia B receiving replacement therapy—representing a significant clinical challenge—they are also being investigated for their potential therapeutic application as anticoagulants. By binding to FIX, these antibodies inhibit the formation of the tenase complex, thereby reducing thrombin generation and providing a targeted approach to preventing thrombosis. Beijing Children's Hospital is currently conducting exploratory research to screen and characterize specific anti-FIX antibodies from hemophilia B patients to develop them for anticoagulation therapy.
