Overview

Apitoxin, commonly known as honey bee venom, is a complex biological mixture containing peptides (such as melittin and apamin), enzymes (like phospholipase A2), and biogenic amines. In a clinical study led by Tanta University, a 0.3% apitoxin gel was evaluated for the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). The drug exerts its therapeutic effects through potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound-healing properties. It works by modulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and providing a protective barrier over the ulcerated mucosa, thereby reducing pain and accelerating the resolution of aphthous ulcers. The study specifically compared the efficacy of this topical gel against low-level laser therapy (LLLT).
