Overview

AT1-AA (Angiotensin II type 1 receptor autoantibodies) are pathogenic agonistic autoantibodies that target the AT1 receptor, mimicking the physiological actions of angiotensin II. These autoantibodies are primarily associated with preeclampsia (PE), where they contribute to systemic hypertension, placental insufficiency, and immune system activation. In research settings, such as studies conducted at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, AT1-AA is used as an experimental agent to induce preeclampsia-like symptoms in animal models, allowing for the investigation of the disease's pathophysiology and its long-term impacts on maternal and offspring health. Research has shown that perinatal exposure to AT1-AA can predispose offspring to elevated blood pressure and inflammation during pregnancy, supporting its role in the familial risk for preeclampsia.
