Overview

AZD6489 (formerly IVX-121) is an investigational virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine developed for the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, particularly in older adults. The vaccine utilizes a recombinant prefusion conformation of the RSV fusion (F) protein, which is the primary target for potent neutralizing antibodies. By presenting these antigens on a VLP scaffold, AZD6489 aims to mimic the structural presentation of the native virus to elicit a robust and durable immune response. AstraZeneca acquired the asset through its acquisition of Icosavax in early 2024. It is currently being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to characterize its safety and immunogenicity profile in adults aged 60 years and older.
