Aztreonam + penicillin refers to the combination of two beta-lactam antibiotics, aztreonam and a member of the penicillin class. Aztreonam is a monobactam antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through high affinity binding to penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3), leading to cell lysis in susceptible gram-negative bacteria[1][2]. Penicillins are a group of beta-lactam antibiotics that inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis primarily by binding to various penicillin-binding proteins, disrupting peptidoglycan crosslinking and causing bactericidal effects. While both drugs share similar mechanisms targeting bacterial cell wall synthesis, they differ in their spectrum of activity and specific PBP targets. Aztreonam is mainly active against gram-negative bacteria and is often used in patients with severe allergies to other beta-lactams due to its low cross-reactivity[6][8]. There is no evidence for a marketed or clinically established fixed-dose combination product containing both aztreonam and any form of penicillin; however, theoretical or empirical use as part of multi-drug regimens may occur for complex infections.
