Basiliximab + tacrolimus is a combination immunosuppressive regimen used primarily in solid organ transplantation, such as kidney and liver transplants. Basiliximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that targets the alpha-chain (CD25) of the interleukin-2 receptor on activated T-lymphocytes, thereby inhibiting IL-2-mediated activation and proliferation of T-cells. Tacrolimus is a calcineurin inhibitor that suppresses immune responses by inhibiting T-cell activation through blockade of interleukin-2 transcription. Together, these agents reduce the risk of acute cellular rejection (ACR) after transplantation by providing complementary mechanisms to suppress immune activity against transplanted organs[1][3][8]. This combination has been shown to be effective in reducing rejection episodes without significantly increasing adverse effects or infection rates[1][2][3].
