Overview

Bellardia trixago is a hemiparasitic annual herb native to the Mediterranean region and currently classified in the family Orobanchaceae (formerly Scrophulariaceae)[4][7]. It has a history of use in traditional medicine for treating backache, menstrual problems, as an antipyretic, and for purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects[1][2][4]. Some sources also mention its use against human immunodeficiency virus and for ailments such as toothaches, headaches, coughs, and other inflammatory conditions[4][8]. The plant contains various bioactive compounds including essential oils (notably cembrene as the major component), flavonoids with antifungal activity, iridoid glucosides like geniposidic acid, and other secondary metabolites[3][4][6]. There is no evidence that Bellardia trixago or its extracts are approved pharmaceuticals; rather it is used in folk medicine or studied for potential bioactivity.
