Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bexxar is a radioimmunotherapy regimen consisting of tositumomab, a murine IgG2a monoclonal antibody, and iodine I 131 tositumomab, the radiolabeled version of the same antibody. It was developed by Corixa Corporation (later acquired by GSK) specifically to target the CD20 antigen expressed on the surface of normal and malignant B-cells. The therapeutic approach involves a two-step process: a dosimetric dose to determine the patient's specific clearance rate, followed by a therapeutic dose designed to deliver targeted beta and gamma radiation directly to tumor sites. Indicated for patients with CD20-positive, relapsed or refractory, low-grade, follicular, or transformed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the drug was a pioneer in the field of radioimmunotherapy. However, due to commercial challenges and the emergence of other therapies, GSK discontinued the manufacture and sale of the Bexxar therapeutic regimen in February 2014.
