Overview

CD44 siRNA refers to small interfering RNA molecules specifically designed to silence the expression of the CD44 gene. CD44 is a cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and cancer stem cell maintenance. Overexpression of CD44 is associated with tumor progression and metastasis in various cancers such as breast cancer and colorectal cancer. By delivering synthetic double-stranded RNA sequences that are complementary to the mRNA of CD44, these agents induce sequence-specific degradation of the target mRNA via the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway. This results in reduced levels of functional CD44 protein within cells. Mechanistically, knockdown of CD44 using siRNA has been shown to inhibit proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumorigenesis while promoting apoptosis and increasing chemosensitivity in cancer stem cells from multiple tumor types[5][6]. Delivery systems for these agents often employ nanoparticles or hyaluronic acid-based carriers for targeted uptake by tumors overexpressing CD44[4]. There are no approved pharmaceutical products named "CD44 siRNA"; this term generally refers to research-grade or experimental therapeutic oligonucleotides used primarily in preclinical studies.
