Overview

Cefazolin + clarithromycin is a combination of two antibiotics used together for their synergistic antibacterial effects. Cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing peptide chain elongation. This combination has been studied for its efficacy in eradicating biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus on medical devices and has also been evaluated as an alternative regimen in the management of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) in pregnancy[1][2]. The combined use may offer enhanced activity against certain infections where monotherapy is insufficient.
