Overview

Cefepime + colistin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including carbapenem-resistant organisms. Cefepime is a fourth-generation cephalosporin (beta-lactam) antibiotic that acts by inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis and leading to cell lysis and death. Colistin (also known as polymyxin E) is a polymyxin antibiotic that disrupts the outer and inner membranes of Gram-negative bacteria by binding to lipopolysaccharides, displacing divalent cations, and increasing membrane permeability, resulting in bacterial cell death. The combination is often reserved for critically ill patients with limited therapeutic options due to resistance patterns[1][2][4][5][6].
