Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of standard chemotherapy followed by ibritumab tiuxetan (marketed as Zevalin), a radiolabeled monoclonal antibody. Ibritumomab tiuxetan is an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody conjugated to the radioactive isotope yttrium-90, used primarily in the treatment of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The mechanism involves targeting CD20 on B cells, delivering cytotoxic beta radiation directly to malignant and normal B cells, resulting in cell death. Chemotherapy is typically administered first to reduce tumor burden and improve subsequent response; Zevalin is then given as consolidation therapy after recovery from chemotherapy-induced cytopenias. This regimen aims to maximize tumor cell kill by combining the broad cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy with targeted radioimmunotherapy[1][2][3][6].
