Chloramphenicol + dexamethasone is a fixed-dose combination drug consisting of two active ingredients: chloramphenicol, a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic, and dexamethasone, a potent synthetic corticosteroid. Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, thereby preventing the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Dexamethasone exerts anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by inhibiting multiple inflammatory cytokines and mediators such as prostaglandins. This combination is primarily used topically (eye drops, ear drops, ointments) for the treatment of ocular or otic infections where inflammation coexists with or increases the risk for bacterial infection—such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis, corneal ulcers (eye), otitis externa or media (ear), post-operative eye inflammation/infection prevention.
