This is a combination of three antibiotics—chloramphenicol, gentamycin, and metronidazole—each with distinct mechanisms of action. Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, primarily exerting a bacteriostatic effect[1][4]. Gentamycin (an aminoglycoside) inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and is mainly bactericidal against gram-negative bacteria[4][5]. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that disrupts DNA synthesis in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, leading to cell death[2][4][5]. This combination may be used for severe mixed infections where both aerobic and anaerobic coverage are required or in veterinary medicine for complex infections such as peritonitis or septic arthritis[3][5].
