Overview

This is a combination of three antibiotics—chloramphenicol, gentamycin, and metronidazole—each with distinct mechanisms of action. Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, primarily exerting a bacteriostatic effect. Gentamycin (an aminoglycoside) inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and is mainly bactericidal against gram-negative bacteria. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that disrupts DNA synthesis in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, leading to cell death. This combination may be used for severe mixed infections where both aerobic and anaerobic coverage are required or in veterinary medicine for complex infections such as peritonitis or septic arthritis.
