Overview

Chromium pidolate is a trivalent chromium salt of pidolic acid (L-pyroglutamic acid) that serves as a bioavailable source of chromium, an essential trace mineral. It is primarily recognized for its role in enhancing the action of insulin, thereby facilitating the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Mechanistically, chromium is thought to increase insulin receptor phosphorylation and promote glucose transporter translocation to the cell membrane. Clinical investigations, such as those involving patients with type 2 diabetes, have evaluated its potential to improve glycemic control and reduce markers of oxidative stress, including thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). While widely available as a dietary supplement, its therapeutic efficacy in metabolic disorders continues to be explored in clinical settings.
