CIGB-166 is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) developed by the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) as a biosimilar candidate for ranibizumab. It is specifically designed to treat neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by targeting and neutralizing Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGF-A). By binding to VEGF-A, CIGB-166 prevents the growth factor from interacting with its receptors, VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2, on the surface of vascular endothelial cells. This action inhibits the proliferation of abnormal, leaky blood vessels in the eye and reduces macular edema, which are the primary drivers of vision loss in AMD patients. The drug is administered via intravitreal injection and has been evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials in Cuba.
