Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ciprofloxacin + roxithromycin is a combination of two antibacterial agents, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication and transcription in bacteria. Roxithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. This combination may be used to broaden the antibacterial spectrum or target mixed infections where both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens are suspected. Both drugs also exhibit immunomodulatory effects; they can induce apoptosis in activated T cells by upregulating Fas ligand expression and activating caspases[1]. The combination has been explored as a potential antimicrobial therapy in veterinary medicine[3], but there is limited evidence for its routine use as a fixed-dose product in humans.
