Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cistanche Total Glycosides refers to the purified mixture of bioactive phenylethanoid and other glycosides extracted from species of the genus *Cistanche*, primarily *Cistanche deserticola* and *Cistanche tubulosa*. These compounds are the main active ingredients responsible for the pharmacological effects attributed to traditional Chinese medicine preparations containing cistanche. The primary mechanisms include neuroprotection (notably in Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia), immunomodulation, antioxidant activity, hepatoprotection, anti-inflammatory effects (including inhibition of NF-κB and JAK2 signaling), metabolic regulation (lipid-lowering and glucose-lowering), anti-tumor activity (notably against hepatocellular carcinoma via mitochondrial dysfunction induction in cancer cells), and potential benefits for male reproductive health. The neuroprotective effect is partly mediated by modulation of oxidative stress pathways such as Nrf-2/Keap-1[1][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].
