Citronellol is a naturally occurring acyclic monoterpenoid alcohol found in various essential oils, including geranium, rose, and citronella. It is widely utilized in the fragrance and cosmetic industries for its floral, rose-like scent and is also used as a flavoring agent in the food industry. Beyond its commercial applications, citronellol is being investigated for several therapeutic roles, including its potential as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antineoplastic agent. Research suggests it can potentiate the efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitors like sunitinib in renal cell carcinoma by inhibiting the JAK2/STAT3 and EGFR signaling pathways. Additionally, it has been explored as a component of lipid nanoparticles for mRNA delivery and as a natural antifungal and acaricidal agent. In clinical settings, it is often administered via aromatherapy to manage fatigue and improve sleep quality in patients with chronic conditions such as end-stage renal disease.
