Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Clindamycin + piperacillin + tazobactam is a combination of three antibiotics used together, typically as empiric therapy for severe polymicrobial infections such as necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) and other life-threatening or hospital-acquired infections. - **Clindamycin** is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, providing activity against many anaerobic bacteria and some gram-positive organisms. It also suppresses toxin production in certain bacteria such as group A Streptococcus. - **Piperacillin** is an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins; it has broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative, some gram-positive, and anaerobic bacteria. - **Tazobactam** is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects piperacillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, thereby extending its spectrum of activity[6][8][10]. This triple combination provides very broad coverage against aerobic and anaerobic pathogens including resistant strains often encountered in severe mixed infections[7]. It is most commonly used in critical care settings where rapid empiric coverage for multiple potential pathogens—including toxin-producing organisms—is required.
