Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dimetapp is a well-known brand of over-the-counter (OTC) multi-symptom cold and allergy medications, primarily formulated for children. The product line typically features combinations of active ingredients designed to address upper respiratory symptoms. The core components often include brompheniramine maleate, a first-generation antihistamine that acts as a Histamine H1 receptor antagonist to alleviate sneezing and runny nose, and phenylephrine hydrochloride, a sympathomimetic amine that acts as an Alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist to reduce nasal congestion. Many formulations also incorporate dextromethorphan hydrobromide as a cough suppressant. Originally developed by Wyeth and later managed by Pfizer and GSK (Haleon), the brand was acquired by Foundation Consumer Healthcare before being sold to Prestige Consumer Healthcare in 2021. It is widely used for the temporary relief of symptoms associated with the common cold, hay fever, and other respiratory allergies.
