DTaP-IPV-Hib is a pentavalent combination vaccine designed for active immunization against five major childhood diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis (polio), and invasive diseases caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). The vaccine typically consists of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, acellular pertussis antigens (including pertussis toxoid and filamentous hemagglutinin), inactivated poliovirus (types 1, 2, and 3), and the Hib capsular polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol phosphate) conjugated to a protein carrier such as tetanus toxoid. By combining these components into a single injection, the vaccine simplifies pediatric immunization schedules and improves compliance. It is widely used in national immunization programs and has been studied for potential non-specific effects on the immune system, such as its association with the development of atopic dermatitis in infants.
