Overview

Dopamine + lidocaine is an experimental combination of two well-established drugs, dopamine and lidocaine, investigated primarily for its potential synergistic effects in cutaneous analgesia. Dopamine is a catecholamine neurotransmitter and vasopressor used to treat hemodynamic imbalances such as shock, acting mainly through agonism at dopaminergic and adrenergic receptors to increase cardiac output and perfusion[8]. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic and class Ib antiarrhythmic agent that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction to produce local anesthesia[1]. Preclinical studies have shown that coadministration of dopamine with lidocaine produces a synergistic effect on cutaneous analgesia—dopamine alone can induce dose-dependent analgesia but when combined with lidocaine enhances the quality and duration of the anesthetic effect beyond either drug alone[2][5]. This combination has not been approved for clinical use but has been studied in animal models as an infiltrative anesthetic approach.
