Elental + aminosalicylates

Elental + aminosalicylates is a combination therapy consisting of Elental, an elemental diet formula, and aminosalicylate drugs (5-aminosalicylates or 5-ASA). Elental is a nutritionally complete elemental diet used primarily in Japan for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other gastrointestinal disorders; it provides nutrients in easily absorbable forms to reduce digestive workload. Aminosalicylates are anti-inflammatory agents that inhibit the production of cyclooxygenase, prostaglandins, thromboxane synthetase, platelet activating factor synthetase, and interleukin-1 by macrophages. This reduces acute inflammation in IBD such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The combination may be used to induce or maintain remission in IBD by providing both nutritional support (via Elental) and direct anti-inflammatory action (via aminosalicylates).
