Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Elental + aminosalicylates is a combination therapy consisting of Elental, an elemental diet formula, and aminosalicylate drugs (5-aminosalicylates or 5-ASA). Elental is a nutritionally complete elemental diet used primarily in Japan for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other gastrointestinal disorders; it provides nutrients in easily absorbable forms to reduce digestive workload. Aminosalicylates are anti-inflammatory agents that inhibit the production of cyclooxygenase, prostaglandins, thromboxane synthetase, platelet activating factor synthetase, and interleukin-1 by macrophages. This reduces acute inflammation in IBD such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease[1][2][9]. The combination may be used to induce or maintain remission in IBD by providing both nutritional support (via Elental) and direct anti-inflammatory action (via aminosalicylates).
