Overview

Epirubicin + ifosfamide + vincristine is a combination chemotherapy regimen used primarily in the treatment of advanced or recurrent cancers, including breast cancer and small cell lung cancer. This regimen combines three cytotoxic agents with distinct mechanisms of action:\n- Epirubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, leading to DNA strand breaks and apoptosis.\n- Ifosfamide is an alkylating agent from the oxazaphosphorine class that crosslinks DNA strands, preventing cell division.\n- Vincristine is a vinca alkaloid that binds to tubulin and inhibits microtubule formation, arresting cells in metaphase during mitosis.\n\nThe combination exploits different mechanisms to maximize antitumor activity while minimizing overlapping toxicities. It has been studied as salvage therapy for treatment-resistant advanced breast cancer[1] and as part of alternating regimens for small cell lung cancer[2][3]. The regimen may be referred to by acronyms such as VIE or IVE.
